Check visa details and conditions

If your visa was granted after 1 February 2020 and you are affected by current Australian Government travel restrictions, you will not be able to check your visa details and conditions using Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) until the restrictions are lifted. You should refer to your visa grant letter or access your ImmiAccount instead.

VEVO for organisations

Register an organisation for VEVO

The types of organisations that register for VEVO include but are not limited to:

  • Registered Migration Agents (RMAs)
  • employers
  • labour suppliers
  • sharing economy organisations
  • education providers
  • financial institutions
  • real estate agents
  • telecommunication companies
  • government agencies

Foreign governments in Australia cannot register for VEVO. If you are a representative of a foreign government and need to know the visa status of a foreign national in Australia, ask the visa holder to email you their status directly from VEVO.

Step 1. Your identification numbers required

To register you must have an Australian Business Number (ABN).

Migration Agents applying for Registered Migration Agent access to VEVO will also need to provide their Migration Agent Registration Number (MARN).

Education institutions should also provide their:

  • Commonwealth Register for Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) number or
  • Registered Training Organisation (RTO) number, if the CRICOS number is not available.

Step 2. Create an ImmiAccount

Select Organisation, select Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) for organisations.

Your Organisation Account Administrator (OAA) may need to approve your access. If you are the first person from your organisation creating the ImmiAccount, we may assign you as the Organisation Account Administrator. The Department will need to approve all access requests.

Type of access given to organisations

VEVO provides different access categories depending on your type of organisation. Your business requirement will determine the VEVO access provided.

Organisation Category Description
Employers Work entitlements Employers, labour suppliers, economy sharers or background screening companies can register for the work entitlements category. This category allows you to check the work rights of visa holders who are either prospective and/or current employees. VEVO will display whether a person has:
  • unlimited work rights
  • limited work rights including a description of the work conditions
  • no work rights.
Educational institutions Study entitlements Only authorised education providers can register for the study rights category. This category allows you to check the study rights of students. VEVO will display whether a person has:
  • unlimited study rights
  • limited study rights including study conditions
  • no study rights.
Authorised institutions can also select the work entitlements category if required.
Licensing authorities Licensing eligibility Only authorised licensing authorities that issue work related licences can register for the licensing eligibility category. This category enables authorised licensing authorities to check the residence status and work rights of a person applying for a licence. VEVO will display whether a person:
  • is living permanently or temporarily in Australia
  • if they have: unlimited work rights, limited work rights including work conditions or no work rights.
Commercial organisations Residence status Only organisations that need to know a person's residence status in Australia (such as telecommunication providers, real estate agents and financial institutions) can register for the residence status category.
You can then check the residence status of a person.
VEVO will display whether a person is living permanently or temporarily in Australia.
Government organisations Immigration status Only Australian government departments or agencies that need to know a person's residence status in Australia can register for the immigration status category.
This category enables government departments and agencies to check whether a person is a:
  • temporary or permanent resident
  • New Zealand citizen in Australia.
Medicare Australia Medicare eligibility Only staff from Medicare/Department of Human Services can register for this category.
Migration agents Migration agent Only Registered Migration Agents (RMA) with a valid Migration Agent Registration Number (MARN) can register for this category.
This category enables RMAs to be provided similar information as the visa holder is provided. VEVO will display all information an RMA needs to know about their client’s current in-effect visa.

Check someone's visa details with VEVO

Only registered organisations that have a visa holder's permission can check visa details. The organisation must register for an ImmiAccount. You can then access VEVO through your ImmiAccount.

You can only check the visa conditions of non-Australian passport holders. You can not check Australian passports in VEVO.

Step 1. Get the visa holder's travel document details and permission

Get permission from the visa holder to use their travel document details and make the VEVO check. Travel documents are used to confirm the holder's identity and nationality. Everyone who travels to Australia must present a valid and approved travel document. Non-Australian citizens also need to have an in-effect visa recorded against it.

VEVO accepts:

  • Passport
  • ImmiCard
  • Convention Travel Document – also known as a Titre de Voyage
  • Document for Travel To Australia (DFTTA)
  • PLO56 Evidence Card

Step 2. Log in

Log into VEVO through your organisation's ImmiAccount. If you do not have an ImmiAccount, you will need to register for an ImmiAccount before you can access VEVO.

Step 3. Enter the name of the visa holder you want to check

Enter the visa holder's name as it appears on that person's travel document.

Step 4. Select the reference document

Select the type of travel document you are using for the search from the 'document type' options.

Step 5. Enter the visa holder's details

Enter the visa holder's:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • travel document number

If an ImmiCard or PLO56 Evidence Card is the reference document you are using, you do not need to enter a country. For all other documents, enter the nationality of the document holder.

Step 6. Submit the information

Click the box to accept VEVO's terms and conditions.

If the details are correct, click 'Submit'.

Users who find VEVO is unavailable when they try to check visa details should record the time and date that VEVO system was unavailable.

Step 7. Save a PDF

You can save a PDF version of the VEVO return information. We recommend that you do save this PDF. Our compliance officers may request this information on field inspections.
